Today's lesson consonant (c): ㄱ vowel (v): ㅏ

Lesson 1:

Consonant:

It's name is 기역 (once you study more you can read this, too.)

*consonants can have a different sound if it is at the beginning of the syllable or at the end.

When "" begins a syllable it sounds like the English hard "g" sound as in "good"

When "" ends the syllable it sounds like the English "k" sound as in "truck"

Vowel:

*In order to study vowels we need to know one very special rule about Korean syllables.

*If you see "" at the beginning of a Korean syllable, it is silent.  It has a different sound if it finishes the syllable.  We will find out more about this later.

Since each syllable must be consonant-vowel-consonant CVC this vowel would actually look like:

So, the sound for this letter is the short vowel "a" as in "apple"

When you put the consonant and vowel we learnt today together we would get:

and it would sound like "ga" as in Lady Gaga

If you add the final consonant it would look like:

and it would sound like "gak"

that's all today.  Don't worry if you don't get it, that was a lot of rules for one day.
Tomorrow we will do review and learn a new consonant and vowel!

See you tomorrow

before we start

I'm gonna start with some basic rules before we start.

*Korean is a phonetic language (each character has a sound)

*Characters are organized together to form a syllable.

*Each syllable is composed of a consonant-vowel-consonant grouping
-It doesn't always have the final consonant

*more to come*

How to learn

We are gonna learn the Korean alphabet together.

Everyday Im gonna put up a new vowel and a new consonant. There will be review of previous characters and maybe throw in some tests. I'm also gonna introduce some rules for reading Korean along the way.

So let's get learning!
