Consonant:
ㄱ
It's name is 기역 (once you study more you can read this, too.)
*consonants can have a different sound if it is at the beginning of the syllable or at the end.
When "ㄱ" begins a syllable it sounds like the English hard "g" sound as in "good"
When "ㄱ" ends the syllable it sounds like the English "k" sound as in "truck"
Vowel:
ㅏ
*In order to study vowels we need to know one very special rule about Korean syllables.
*If you see "ㅇ" at the beginning of a Korean syllable, it is silent. It has a different sound if it finishes the syllable. We will find out more about this later.
Since each syllable must be consonant-vowel-consonant CVC this vowel would actually look like:
아
So, the sound for this letter is the short vowel "a" as in "apple"
When you put the consonant and vowel we learnt today together we would get:
가
and it would sound like "ga" as in Lady Gaga
If you add the final consonant it would look like:
각
and it would sound like "gak"
that's all today. Don't worry if you don't get it, that was a lot of rules for one day.
Tomorrow we will do review and learn a new consonant and vowel!
See you tomorrow
